Background and history behind the islands associated with the Dead Island Universe. From the book, the comics and all the current video games that have been released as of the publication of this guide. Introduction: The Banoi Archipelago is a volcanic island chain in Oceania. The largest island is Banoi Island, other important islands are Palanai, Narapela and Amaia. The area is located near Papua New Guinea and Australia, giving the archipelago lush tropical jungles, soft sandy beaches and plenty of sun all year round. The islands were only colonized a few hundred years ago, but since the Information Era, they have become popular tourist sites, with many visitors from all over the world traveling to the various islands for holidays, work or a mixture in between. Banoi island has a large resort built on it, operated by the Royal Palms group. During World War II, the Japanese occupied the archipelago, constructing various tunnels and bunkers across them all, some of which can still be accessed today. Banoi Island:Banoi island is the largest island of the archipelago, with a volcano in its center, the size and layout of the island makes it the main island people travel to when coming to the archipelago. The capital of the island is Moresby, which has a high population density but has fallen into poverty since the resort was constructed, leading to many of its citizens living in slum conditions. Moresby has all the hallmarks of a well built up town, however, with a large Police Station and Town Hall, as well as a Church and Bank. These buildings are old, judging from the architecture, which tells us that they were originally built when the town was still young, around the mid to late eighteen-hundreds. There's also likely a moderately sized hospital in Moresby, judging by the amount of ambulances that can be seen. The Royal Palms Hotel is the main source of revenue for the island, with thousands of visitors each year coming to the complex to take in the sights and sounds of Banoi. It has many bars and pools to keep guests happy, while a large, modern and grand hotel towers over it all with space for several hundred guests in it. There are also small, traditional tropical bungalows in the Resort area for those who do not want to stay in a modern hotel. The resort can partly be blamed for Moresby's decent into poverty, as the sudden increase of both tourists and citizens likely overwhelmed the town, causing rapid, uncontrollable expansion. The primary method of people reaching Banoi is to travel by aircraft to the Banoi Airport, capable to servicing many large airlines and airliners. Several aircraft would have come through the airport each day, taking passengers to and from the island and resort. The secondary method was to come via boat where passengers could unload at the resort marina, but air travel is the primary method of reaching Banoi. The resort and airport were linked by a large overpass which crossed over the Mingende Jungle, the main and largest jungle of Banoi. Due to the general lawlessness of Banoi, other than in Moresby or the Resort, the jungle is filled with rival warlords fighting for power. These include dangerous individuals of the likes of Afran, Vargas and Matutero, all of which are well known across the natives of Banoi for their ruthlessness. However, looking past that you can see the natural beauty that is Banoi, with the lush jungle surrounding the small native villages, made up of wooden huts on stilts to survive any flooding that may occur from the tropical monsoons. There are many bunkers left over from the Japanese occupation, mostly around the resort area. Many of these are still intact from the sturdy construction materials used and they can be entered by inquisitive individuals interested in the history or just to explore the island. The last surprise of Banoi is the maximum security prison located on an island just off the shore. It can be seen from the resort and it houses many dangerous criminals from across the world, including terrorists, hitmen and mass murderers. The island is rocky, with only a small dock used to transport prisoners and supplies to the island. There is also a helipad on the roof for guards to get on and off the island. It's also surrounded by a sea minefield to make sure escape is impossible. Banoi island has a small military, called the Banoi Island Defence Force, or B.I.D.F for short. This could be mobilized in greater numbers should Banoi ever get invaded, but a small garrison is constantly fielded during peacetime. Palanai Island:Palanai island is the second largest island in the archipelago, but at less than half the size of Banoi, it is far less built up. The capital is Henderson, a far nicer location than Moresby, it is modeled after a Mediterranean town and is the hot spot for tourists on the island. It's a far nicer, richer place than Moresby, likely due to the lack of a large resort on the island creating a sudden influx of people. It has a Cinema, Church and bank located in it, as well as various districts such as a sea market. There is an old colonial era fort constructed on the peninsula of Henderson, which would have been used to defend the town from seaborne attacks and from the state of it, it was used in at least one battle. There's also a modern military base attached to the town, accessible only by a bridge on foot. This would have housed a small defense force that could be mobilized in the event of an invasion of the island. Henderson is linked to the jungle areas of the island via a chain powered ferry, which travels between Palanai Ferry Station and Henderson Ferry Station. This ferry is capable of taking both vehicles and people too and from Henderson, though only parts of Henderson is vehicle accessible, with a majority of the town being foot access only. The jungle area of Palanai is far more prone to flooding than the Mingende Jungle of Banoi. A good chunk of the Palanai Jungle is a mangrove forest, with shallow waterways which are easily flooded during monsoons or rainy seasons. As such, many of the large settlements such as Halai Village or Mataka Village are built on stilts, with raised walkways always above the waterline to keep the town from flooding during these events. Boat is a primary method of traveling around the Palanai jungle, with good mobility and the plentiful amount of water access from the mangrove waterways, there are several locations across Palanai which sell or house boats, such as Marik's Marina. The boats themselves are small, shallow canoe type boats with a single, small outboard motor to propel them through the shallow waterways, though ores are always included for emergencies or silent trips. A laboratory is located in the jungle, though it is not clear whether it is operated by GeoPharm. Like Banoi, Palanai was invaded and occupied by the Japanese and bunkers can be found scattered across the island. However, Palanai was seen as the more 'second line' island, and as such fewer defensive bunkers were built. Instead, it was used as a storehouse and support island, with an extensive tunnel system being built, housing a large radar array to forward the defenders of any incoming allied attack. After the war, it was later used by the Australian Army to store chemicals in, but they later abandoned it again, leaving the chemicals there. One such access to the tunnels is through an old Jesuit mission building, which was abandoned many years ago after the Christian missionaries were killed and the building razed by native shamans. Narapela Island:Narapela island is the third largest island in the archipelago, but not by much. It is only slightly larger than Amaia and is mostly uninhabited. The island is primarily used by GeoPharm, which has a large amount of research stations dotted around the island. There is a docks area for loading and unloading goods, likely to support the many GeoPharm labs, while small tourist centers are dotted around the edges of the island where the beaches are located. A good ninety percent of the islands inhabitants are members of GeoPharm, living in various Staff Villages attached or nearby to the associated lab complex. All sorts of research is conducted on the island, ranging from gene sequencing to cosmetics testing. The owner and founder of GeoPharm, Ronald Crown, lived in his mansion on the island, cementing it as the home base of GeoPharm. There's a small airfield on the island, nowhere near as grand as the Banoi Airport, but serviceable to small, light aircraft. This would be capable of taking small amounts of goods or research to and from the island, or for taking small groups of people. Narapela is a mountainous island, more so than any of the other islands in the archipelago. The Narapela Jungle is, like the other islands, lush and dense, more so than any other island due to the lack of development. Since the island is basically uninhabited other than GeoPharm labs, the jungle has not been touched or developed with highways and roads. Only basic pathways lead through the jungle, connecting the labs to one another, but these are not paved or lit. There are a few fences and bridges here and there, but otherwise the only sign of there being a path is the thin worn line created by hundreds of feet walking through. There are many mountain tops which can be accessed on Narapela and they all give breathtaking views of the entire island, and the archipelago itself from a good angle on a clear day. Amaia Island:Amaia island is the smallest of the four island, only just being peaked by Narapela. It is one of the more built up islands in the archipelago and the only other island to have a Royal Palms resort constructed other than Banoi. While the resort complex is smaller than that on Banoi, it is still a hot tourist attraction, as even though Amaia is the smallest island, it still has picturesque views and beautiful sandy beaches. It is, however, the island we know the least about. Like the others, Amaia has a dense tropical jungle filled with exotic wildlife and plant life. GeoPharm set up a lab in the jungle of Amaia to research something but it's unknown what they were studying.
